The least expensive model we sell is priced in the $600 - $700
range,
while the most expensive models are in the thousands of dollars. That's
a
lot of money to pay for a scope. For their money, however, ACOG buyers
get
the very highest quality scope, with the most innovative features, all
in
a reliable and rugged package. Trijicon products are available
for purchase at our e-store. All Trijicon items are quality made
in America. For an in depth look into Trijicon ACOG features, read on... ACOG reticle designs One of the
nicest features of the ACOG's is their wide variety of reticles.
All of them feature some form of trajectory compensation based on
either
the .223/5.56mm NATO or the .308/7.62mm NATO cartridges. Some models,
like
the TA01NSN and the TA31RCOM4 have trajectory compensation built for
carbine
(11.5" to 16" barreled) AR15's that shoot the .223/5.56mm NATO round.
Others,
such as the TA01, are built for the 20" barreled .223 AR15. The
reticles
have easy-to-acquire chevrons, crosshairs, or donuts as the aiming
point.MagnificationACOG's are made in relatively low magnification versions, such as 1.5X, 3.5X, 4X, or 5.5X. This serves two purposes. First, it lets the shooter shoot much more quickly than with a higher magnification scope. Simply put, with less magnification, your eyes go from viewing the target directly (gun off the shoulder) to viewing the target through the scope (when you put the gun to your shoulder) easily, naturally, and rapidly. Second, it allows for a much larger field of view than a higher magnification scope.Size and weightThe small size of ACOG's - and their even smaller cousins, the ACOG Compacts - makes for light weight. They all have aircraft grade aluminum housings that are waterproof, fogproof, and shockprooof. Their short length (about 5" for any given version) also allows for a wider field of view and a unique and desirable feature: a forgiving sight picture! Mount an ACOG and rapidly put the gun to your shoulder. You'll see that the reticle comes into view with little effort. You don't need to hunt around to find the reticle . The reticle won't "black-out" easily as many other low powered scopes (such as Tasco's) will do. If you need to take a rapid shot, an ACOG helps you do it!Bindon Aiming Concept (BAC) Some ACOG models
come with an additional reticle illumination method
known
as the Bindon Aiming Concept (BAC). This is a fancy way of saying that
the
scope has a light-gathering, fiber optic pipe. On the outside body of
the
scope, the pipe gathers ambient light. It directs this light inside the
scope
and to the end of the pipe, which lights up the illuminated part of the
reticle.
If it is a sunny, desert day, the reticle lights up much more brightly
than
normal because more light is needed to see the reticle quickly. If it
is
a low-light, gloomy day, the reticle lights up less brightly than
normal
because less light is needed to see the reticle quickly. You get the
amount
of light that is appropriate for a given condition. BAC is a better
alternative
to electronic illumination because you get ample lighting, but no
batteries
are required.Tritium illumination The
inner, most important part of each ACOG reticle is illuminated with
radioactive
tritium. Depending on the given model of ACOG, this might be a red
donut,
an amber (pale yellow) crosshair, or some other colored reticle.
Although
the entire reticle (up to down and left to right) is not illuminated,
the
necessary, middle part of the reticle - the focus point - is
illuminated
with tritium. This works well for dawn, dusk, and very low light
conditions.
Coupled with their high grade light transmission, ACOG's allow accurate
target
identification and aiming at night, provided there is some form of
local
illumination (moonlight, streetlights, etc.). Such a feature makes for
a
big advantage over iron sights.Lens brightnessOne of the reasons why ACOG's cost so much money is their extremely high quality lenses. Each ACOG features fully multi-coated lenses for astounding light gathering ability. High quality, advanced coatings are found on each lens. Although we do not have any hard figures to offer, we estimate that ACOG's offer at least 96% light transmission. By comparison, they have the light transmission and resolution of a similarly sized Leupold Mark 4 series tactical scope - the highest grade of Leupold currently on the market.MountingACOG's are all built to mount into the carry handle of an
AR15,
M16, or M4. They all provide a see-through, built-in sight channel
under
the scope so iron sights can also be used. Some ACOG's, such as the
TA01NSN,
come with a rail adapter for mounting to flattop AR15's, or any other
longgun
equipped with a Weaver base or Picatinny (M1913) rail. For those who
want
to mount a no-mount-included ACOG to one of these base styles, the
adapters
(such as the TA51) are sold separately. ACOG Compact adapters are made
specifically
for ACOG Compact models. ACOG adapters are made specifically for ACOG
models.
Some quick detach adapters (ARMS style, quick-release, throw-lever
mounts)
are available. Although we don't carry them, some gun-specific adapters
are
made for the Sig 550, HK MP5 series, and Uzi. The point here is that
you
can mount to firearms other than AR15's. Accessories "Killflash"
lens covers are available. These are honeycombed, front
lens covers made to block out peripheral light sources, such as a gun's
muzzleblast.
Traditional, bikini type, rubber scope covers are included with each
model,
and are sold separately. Replacement mounting thumb screws are also
available. How to buy an ACOGIf these innovative and desirable features haven't convinced you to buy an ACOG, nothing will.
